EAERE 2020 Goes Virtual

It is our pleasure to host the 25th Annual Conference of the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists online in 2020! Due to the corona virus outbreak the city government of Berlin has decided that all physical events at universities have to be cancelled until the end of July. Therefore EAERE together with the PC and LOC decided to hold this year's conference as a virtual event.

The conference is organized by Technische Universität Berlin and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU Berlin). The conference is supported by the wider Berlin research community in environmental and resource economics, most notably by the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin), and Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC). The organization of the conference is also supported by the Berlin Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI).

We are looking forward to virtually welcoming you to the conference - save the date!

Tuesday, June 23 - Friday, July 3, 2020

Furthermore, we are also happy to announce, that we have agreed with the EAERE Council to hold the 26th EAERE Annual Conference in Berlin in 2021 as it was originally planned for this year.

Message from EAERE President Christian Gollier from April 9, 2020

Dear colleagues and friends,

As previously announced, as a consequence of the COVID-19 outbreak, the 25th Annual Conference of the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE) will not take place in Berlin as originally planned.

After a careful analysis of all the possible alternatives, the EAERE Council and the Local Organising and Programme Committees from Berlin have agreed to organise the 25th EAERE conference online, in an adjusted format.

EAERE is committed to explore other ways of facilitating scientific research and collaboration whilst reducing the ecological footprint of our scientific events: we want to take this crisis as an opportunity. We are working on a way to allow accepted papers authors to share their papers and to offer a selection of online events in the dates initially planned for this year’s Annual Conference - June 24th-27th, 2020. We will provide more information about our online offer in the coming weeks.

I would like to invite and encourage all our members to participate in this year’s experiment: hopefully our joint efforts will be well repaid (and our failures forgiven), and we will certainly consider the results of this year’s experiment when making plans for future events.

The EAERE Council and the Local Organising and Programme Committees from Berlin have also agreed that the Berlin conference in its traditional and initially planned format will be postponed to next year.  Thus, I am delighted to announce that the 26th EAERE Annual Conference will take place in Berlin, on June 23rd-26th, 2021. Participants with an active registration to this year’s Annual Conference will be refunded.

Unfortunately, this solution has a negative consequence: the conference entrusted to the University of Bologna for year 2021, in the beautiful city of Rimini, is possibly postponed to a future year. We are very grateful to our Italian colleagues for their understanding and flexibility during this crisis.

I would like to personally thank members of the Berlin Conference Local Organising and Programme Committees for their continued support during this difficult crisis, and to their tireless efforts to still be able to offer an inclusive and environmentally friendly platform for this year.

I look forward to meeting you online this Summer, and to gather in person in Berlin next year.

Christian Gollier
EAERE President
